10/27/21 A trip to Conneticut
So I felt that a October break was necessary for my general peace of mind and part of my transition to less work and more travel. Originally I tried to convince Wendy to take off the week and go to Chicago and back ,but she was reluctant to do so for variety of reasons. I originally planned on going to Gettysburg and Altoona but the weather did not cooperate. As the weather front was going from west to east, I decided to go east .I ended up going to New London ,Connecticut. On Tuesday I took the day off and pretty much worked on eBay, relaxed and went to see Dune which was excellent.
On Wednesday I left around 11:00 in order to avoid rush hour which worked out ,as previously the Google maps was showing delays .However as I drove up to the Tappan zee there were no delays at all. It was pretty much smooth driving most of the way with only a very few delays My first stop was Frank Pepe's Pizza in New Haven where there was no wait . I had the white clam pizza which was excellent -so one of the essential road stops was checked off.
I then stopped at the Florence Griswold museum which was excellent. It's a old house that she turned into a boarding house in order to make a living .It ended up turning into an art colony and there's all sorts of art all over the place .It was a great story .Most impressive was the kitchen where the artists all painted on the doors. I really loved it. I then walked down to the river and could see where one gets inspired. A truly excellent art museum
. I then drove to Fort Groton battlefield. There wasn't much there but you could still see the remains of the fort and the passageway. It was pretty nice and it does have a nice view of New London. It knocked off another bucket list for me on my list of revolutionary battlefields.
I then went to the hotel. I realized when I got there that it was not in the greatest area and that I perhaps should have done a little more research on how safe the area is. I feel the town itself is safe but it's not a great area to walk around. Based on that I drove a little bit further south to a area closer to the river to eat at On The Waterfront. It was okay. I thought it was good but the portions were a little bit skimpy for the price. I sat at the bar and had clam chowder and a lobster roll and a scotch and I was satisfied. I then got back to the hotel to find out that Liz's grandmother had died at 94. I was sorry to hear that. She was a very classy lady and I liked her. She was also really good with the kids. I got back to the hotel around 6:30 .The rest of the night I just read and watched TV on my laptop
